Milano Centrale has invited JR to transform the facade of the station and Piazza Duca d’Aosta into a rocky landscape, featuring La Nascita, a monumental sculpture. This installation conjures a surreal architectural fantasy, seamlessly blending the station’s grandeur and historical significance, while transcending conventional notions of time and place. La Nascita will be showcased from April 10th to May 1st.
Construction of Milano Centrale began in 1906, following the opening of the Simplon tunnel, and tonnes of rock were excavated from the Alps for the project. With La Nascita, JR superimposes the chiselled facade of the mountain onto the station, interweaving the mineral formations with its eclectic architecture.
Like JR’s previous installations in Florence and Rome, Milano Centrale features a deep gash that invites viewers to contemplate the station’s celebrated and tragic history. Amidst the rock formations, travellers are invited to reflect on the human urge to explore, exchange and migrate.
