The Liu Wei exhibition Tulips is on view at the Jebum-Gang Art Center in Lhasa, Tibet, until September 19th, 2026. Marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in Tibet, the project occupies a restored 19th-century temple, creating a striking dialogue between Liu Wei’s contemporary vision and a site shaped by centuries of Tibetan history, architecture, and cultural heritage.
When memories transformed through the landscape of Tibet
The exhibition’s title draws from Liu Wei’s childhood connection between tulips and the Himalayas—a personal image that became a starting point for exploring Tibet beyond familiar symbols and outside perspectives. Through memory, imagination, and lived experience, the artist approaches the region as a landscape of personal associations and emotional resonance.
Tulips reflects Liu Wei’s enduring fascination with the ways places, materials, and histories influence human perception. The Jebum-Gang Art Center’s historic setting becomes an integral element of the exhibition, allowing the works to engage with the temple’s architecture and spiritual atmosphere.
Material experiments between nature, tradition and transformation
The exhibition features new and recent works crafted from diverse materials, including Tibetan butter, milk, wax, stone, leather, and galvanized steel. Combining organic matter, traditional elements, and industrial processes, Liu Wei examines the tension between fragility and endurance, nature and human intervention.
Materials rooted in local culture lend the works a deep connection to their surroundings while continuing the artist’s wider exploration of how objects preserve memories, meanings, and layers of history.
