Reinvention of our relationship to the world

Reinvention of our relationship with the world

The forthcoming exhibition Gustav Metzger: And Then Came the Environment will be on view at Hauser & Wirth in Los Angeles from September 15th, 2024 to January 5th, 2025. This is Metzger’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles and his second major exhibition in the US, highlighting his commitment to exploring the intersections of art, science and environmental activism. The exhibition includes key works such as Dancing Tubes (1968) and Liquid Crystal Environment (1966), as well as a newly commissioned animation by Justin Richburg, inspired by Metzger’s influential essay Nature Demised. These works showcase Metzger’s bold experimentation with technology and deep concern for environmental issues, providing a comprehensive view of his artistic legacy.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a special event entitled Book Launch and Talk: Hans Ulrich Obrist on Gustav Metzger will take place on September 15th, 2024, in Downtown Los Angeles. This conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director of the Serpentine, will celebrate the release of the new publication Gustav Metzger: Conversations with Hans Ulrich Obrist. The talk will explore Metzger’s life, work and enduring influence, providing valuable insights into the artist’s philosophy and approach. Following the lecture, guests are invited to explore the exhibition and reflect on Metzger’s vision of how art can address pressing global challenges.
