Björk and microbiologist Merlin Sheldrake collaborate on Fungi: Web of Life, a narrated 3D film that explores the beauty and ecological importance of fungi. Shot largely in time-lapse, the film explores the essential role fungi play in our world and the mysteries surrounding mycelial life. Sheldrake’s book Entangled Life inspired the project, which was produced by Stranger Than Fiction and features stunning footage by photographer Stephen Axford and filmmaker Catherine Marciniak. Björk’s involvement adds depth to the compelling exploration of plant life in 3D.
Fungi: Web of Life tells a powerful ecological message that urges us to reconsider the consequences of our resource extraction activities on the earth. It highlights the urgent need to protect the world’s forests, which are threatened by various extractive industries. Through a journey into fungal life, the film explores their role in activating the biosphere’s regenerative capacity and offers insights into how we can work with fungi to adapt to our damaged planet. It also highlights the potential of certain fungal species to biodegrade plastics and facilitate the growth of new body organs, demonstrating the transformative impact of fungal research in just 40 minutes.
