The Journey of Life

Homo Faber 2024, entitled The Journey of Life, has opened on September 1st, 2024 at the stunning Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. This extraordinary event, organised by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, invites visitors to explore the craftsmanship behind the objects that accompany life’s most precious moments. The exhibition features magnificent handcrafted objects selected by the Foundation, showcasing the talents of artisans from around the world.

Renowned filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and architect Nicolò Rosmarini have created a captivating scenography that takes visitors on a metaphorical journey through human life, using the unique spaces of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and its beautifully landscaped gardens. The exhibition includes live demonstrations, participatory workshops and the opportunity to meet some of the artisans, offering a deeply immersive experience.

Parisian fashion house Alaïa is one of the esteemed participants of Homo Faber 2024. Alaïa is presenting a project that embodies its commitment to the celebration of femininity and timeless beauty. Under the creative direction of Pieter Mulier, the exhibition presents a collection of dresses inspired by Mulier’s first show at Alaïa, highlighting Maison’s renowned craftsmanship. These creations featuring iconic knitted velvet and signature hoods exemplify Alaïa’s commitment to perfection, modernity and the art of couture.

Running until September 30th, 2024, Homo Faber 2024 promises to be a celebration of craftsmanship, creativity and the enduring beauty of handmade objects. Organisers, including Foundation Vice President Hanneli Rupert, emphasise the global resonance of the theme, which highlights the geographical diversity of crafts and skills. Rupert expressed her enthusiasm for the vision of the project and praised Guadagnino and Rosmarini’s creative interpretation of the theme. The event also extends beyond the island, with Homo Faber in Città allowing visitors to explore over 70 artisan workshops across Venice.
