The exhibition will take place at Serpentine North from March 12th to August 23rd, 2026, with a press preview scheduled for March 11th. Presented as part of the gallery’s spring/summer programme, the project reflects Serpentine’s commitment to making contemporary art accessible to everyone.

Serpentine’s leadership has described the exhibition as one of the season’s highlights, emphasising its potential to draw audiences from across the globe.

Highlights of the works on display: digital paintings

A central feature of the exhibition will be Hockney’s digital paintings, including his acclaimed Sunrise series. Created on the iPad during the spring of 2020, these works capture the shifting light, colours, and moods of changing seasons. Much like the Impressionists, Hockney records fleeting moments in nature, but his vivid palette and bold, playful compositions give the works a distinctly contemporary character.

Among the most anticipated projects is Moon Room, an immersive installation that reflects Hockney’s enduring fascination with cycles of light and the passage of time. Its atmospheric qualities invite visitors to consider the rhythms of nature in a meditative way.

The exhibition will also feature A Year in Normandy, a ninety-metre frieze inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. This monumental work depicts the transformation of seasons at Hockney’s former studio in Normandy, offering a sweeping panorama of everyday beauty across an entire year.

A celebration of beauty in the everyday

Throughout his career, Hockney has embraced the dialogue between art and technology. In recent interviews, he has suggested that his digital practice encourages viewers to pause, notice their surroundings, and find joy in ordinary moments such as a sunrise or a shift in the weather.

With its combination of large-scale installations and luminous digital paintings, the upcoming David Hockney exhibition at Serpentine North promises not only a celebration of his artistry but also a reminder of how beauty can be found in the everyday.
