Willem Dafoe has been announced as the new Artistic Director of the Theatre Department of La Biennale di Venezia for the years 2025 and 2026. Founded in 1934, the Theatre Department is a key segment of La Biennale, focusing on live performances and promoting artistic innovation in theatre. Known for his illustrious career in both film and theatre, Dafoe was chosen for his profound knowledge, passion and extensive experience in the field.
Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, Chairman of the Board of Directors, expressed his excitement, noting that Dafoe’s discipline and awareness make him an exemplary leader for the department. Dafoe himself emphasised that his roots in theatre have deeply influenced his artistic journey and that he is eager to shape the future of the department.
