To Breathe – Constellation

As part of the exhibition Le monde comme il va at the Bourse De Commerce in Paris, South Korean artist Kimsooja presents a carte blanche entitled To Breathe – Constellation. Located in the museum’s rotunda, the work is grand and otherworldly. It depicts a giant mirror on the floor that distorts the nearby architecture by Tadao Ando, creating the illusion of the sky beneath our feet.

Kimsooja extends her artistic vision across 24 display cases in the Passage and on the lower level of the museum, with works and video installations exploring themes of identity, borders, memory, exile, movement and weaving. She aims to create works that evoke water and air and are accessible to all. Describing herself as a cosmopolitan anarchist, Kimsooja uses her body as a metaphorical needle to thread the fabric of existence. Similarly, the rotunda’s mirror acts as a substitute for the body, reflecting the viewer and connecting them to the inner worlds of others through their gaze. The mirror that Kimsooja offers us also shapes the space into a gathering, a possibility of totality. It invites us all to create a world together.
