The Fondation Beyeler, in collaboration with the LUMA Foundation, presents What Time Is Heaven, an innovative exhibition that transforms the entire museum and its surrounding park into a dynamic art space. This experimental project brings together the work of 30 participants from a variety of backgrounds, including renowned artists Michael Armitage, Marlene Dumas, Carsten Höller, Pierre Huyghe, Arthur Jafa and Tino Sehgal. Each artist’s work interacts with the museum’s architecture and natural environment, creating an evolving living organism.
Michael Armitage presents his vibrant, large-scale paintings that explore cultural and political themes, while Marlene Dumas presents her haunting portraits that delve into human emotions. Carsten Höller, known for his immersive installations, collaborates with Adam Haar to create an interactive work that directly engages visitors. Arthur Jafa’s powerful video installations explore race and identity, and Tino Sehgal creates transformative displays integrating works from the Fondation Beyeler collection.
The exhibition, which emphasises artistic freedom, interdisciplinary exchange, and collective responsibility, was developed by a team that included Sam Keller, Mouna Mekouar, and Hans Ulrich Obrist. It features a mix of visual art, performances, poetry readings and community activities, encouraging multiple visits and new experiences each time. Visitors explore familiar and unfamiliar spaces in the museum through a labyrinthine architecture that encourages connections between individual works.
