The Bronx Museum of the Arts presents FUTURA 2000: BREAKING OUT, a major retrospective celebrating the artist’s journey from graffiti trailblazer to contemporary abstractionist. Running from September 8th, 2024, to March 30th, 2025, this exhibition provides a thorough exploration of FUTURA 2000’s impressive five-decade career, showcasing sculptures, drawings, prints, studies, collaborations, archival material, and new site-specific installations.
Breaking Out emphasizes FUTURA 2000’s distinctive approach, which merges science fiction and space-age aesthetics with innovative techniques. His work, initially rooted in street art and evolving into abstract cosmic forms, employs spray paint to craft intricate patterns of vivid color and expanses that evoke the vastness of outer space. His recurring themes, including the atomic symbol, crane marks, and the enigmatic Pointman, reflect his fascination with perpetual motion and alien imagery.
The exhibition title nods to FUTURA 2000’s seminal 1980 work, Break, where he transformed an entire NYC subway car with vibrant colors, marking a pivotal moment in graffiti art. This spirit of innovation aligns with The Bronx Museum’s mission to highlight groundbreaking artists.
Organized by the University at Buffalo Art Galleries, this exhibition underscores The Bronx Museum’s dedication to presenting influential cultural figures and offering accessible art experiences. Although the museum is undergoing renovations, the north galleries remain open to host this important retrospective and continue to engage with the community.
