Wayne McGregor: On The Other Earth — a post-cinematic dance odyssey at Stone Nest

Visionary choreographer Wayne McGregor returns with another groundbreaking experiment that blurs the boundaries between body, movement, and technology. On The Other Earth—presented at Stone Nest from October 30th, 2025, as part of Somerset House’s off-site programme—ushers audiences into a fully immersive 360-degree environment, merging choreography with digital technologies in a radical reimagining of what a dance performance can be.

A new dimension of dance performance

On The Other Earth is described as the world’s first post-cinematic choreographic installation—a hybrid of performance, art, and technology that situates audiences inside the dance itself. The 57-minute experience unfolds within a cylindrical, panoramic space designed by media artists Jeffrey Shaw and Sarah Kenderdine, featuring a 360-degree stereoscopic, 12K LED, 26-million-pixel nVis screen.

Here, three-dimensional visuals envelop visitors in an eight-metre-wide, four-metre-tall structure where McGregor’s dancers from Company Wayne McGregor and the Hong Kong Ballet appear as hyperreal, fluid bodies. The audience is not a spectator but a participant—moving among virtual performers as sound, light, and image create a sense of alternate physicality and presence.

The intersection of movement and digital technologies

McGregor’s fascination with the dialogue between human motion and digital technologies finds its ultimate expression in On The Other Earth. The project fuses AI-driven choreography, spatialised sound, and real-time digital imaging, resulting in a multi-sensory encounter that questions the very definition of corporeality and presence.

The soundscape—developed by Invisible Mountain using the Bronze generative music platform—creates a tactile, physical environment where vibration and resonance are as much part of the choreography as the dancers themselves. Each sequence of movement interacts with the sound, generating unique visual and sonic layers that make every experience distinct.

Co-produced by Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Ballet, and Studio Wayne McGregor, and co-commissioned by La Biennale di Venezia, Somerset House, and Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, this project demonstrates the scope of global collaboration that defines McGregor’s artistic universe.

Experience ‘On The Other Earth’

Presented in partnership with Stone Nest, On The Other Earth opens October 30th, 2025 and runs until February 22nd, 2026. The installation is recommended for ages 14 and up, due to its immersive and sensory intensity.

McGregor’s creation offers not just a vision of dance’s future, but of how technology can amplify human imagination—an encounter that is, in every sense, out of this world.
