Rashid Johnson’s ‘Directionless’ finds creative possibility in an age of uncertainty

This summer, Rashid Johnson curates Directionless at Hauser & Wirth Menorca, on view from June 21st to October 25th, 2026. Bringing together 28 artists from 10 countries, the exhibition examines uncertainty in art, identity, and the shifting conditions of contemporary life through works that embrace complexity rather than certainty.

Uncertainty in art as a creative force

Directionless begins with the premise that today’s cultural landscape is marked by instability and constant change. Instead of treating uncertainty as an obstacle, the exhibition considers it a source of invention, curiosity, and new perspectives.

To broaden the conversation, Johnson invited Charles Gaines, Firelei Báez, and Cristina Iglesias to nominate artists alongside his own selections. The result is a richly layered presentation that favors dialogue, contrast, and unexpected affinities over fixed conclusions.

As Johnson suggests, the artists gathered here do not retreat from ambiguity—they work through it, uncovering fresh ways of thinking about identity, connection, and experience.

The exhibition features works by Firelei Báez, Georg Baselitz, Ali Cherri, Rineke Dijkstra, Latifa Echakhch, Teresita Fernández, Sally Gabori, Charles Gaines, Todd Gray, Alteronce Gumby, Hugh Hayden, Leslie Hewitt, Hanna Hur, Cristina Iglesias, Michael Joo, Sigalit Landau, Hannah Levy, Julie Mehretu, Joiri Minaya, Wangechi Mutu, Mona Hatoum, Lyle Ashton Harris, Rashid Johnson, Lorna Simpson, Rayyane Tabet, Meg Webster, and Yto Barrada.

Installed across the gallery and outdoor spaces, the works speak in distinct visual languages while circling shared themes of memory, displacement, belonging, and change.

Beyond the exhibition: education and collective learning

The exhibition extends into a public programme developed with the University of the Balearic Islands and the University of Barcelona. Workshops, talks, performances, drawing sessions, and experimental learning initiatives invite visitors to engage with the exhibition’s ideas beyond the gallery walls.

By pairing contemporary art with collaborative learning, Directionless opens space for conversation, reflection, and exchange.
