Aerocene Seoul

The Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul is hosting Aerocene Seoul, a three-month public project from June 25th to September 29th, 2024, as part of its Idea Museum programme. Organised by the museum with support from the Samsung Foundation of Culture, the initiative is in line with the global Aerocene movement initiated by artist Tomás Saraceno. Aerocene is an interdisciplinary community focused on eco-social justice, advocating for a future free of fossil fuels and driven by alternative ways of thinking and living. The project brings together artists, activists and the public in Seoul to engage with these issues through a series of events and workshops.

One of the key events is the Museo Aero Solar, a giant floating sculpture made from over 5,000 reused plastic bags collected from local communities. This collaborative effort transforms waste into a powerful symbol of solidarity and environmental awareness. Visitors can walk inside the sculpture and experience the diverse stories and messages of care and change from around the world. Another highlight is the Aerocene Backpack Workshop, where participants can explore a portable, solar-powered flight kit that floats without fossil fuels, promoting a hands-on approach to eco-friendly innovation.

The programme also includes the Aerocene Forum with discussions on climate justice and screenings of the documentary Fly with Pacha, Into the Aerocene, which documents the work of the Aerocene community in Argentina. In addition, the newly translated Korean editions of Aerocene Newspapers I and II will be available, further spreading the movement’s messages of sustainability and activism. Through these activities, Aerocene Seoul invites the public to rethink our relationship with the environment and to consider new ways of living in harmony with the earth and its ecosystems.

Discover how Tomás Saraceno bridges art and science in our interview, which explores the connections between humanity, nature and space.
