CHANEL has become a Lead Partner of M+, Hong Kong’s museum of visual culture, extending a collaboration launched in 2023 through a three-year agreement spanning exhibitions, public programmes and digital storytelling. The expanded partnership introduces Pioneering Visions, an initiative celebrating artists who challenge conventions and shape contemporary visual culture across Asia and beyond.
Located in West Kowloon Cultural District, M+ occupies a landmark building by Herzog & de Meuron, whose striking architecture reflects the museum’s interdisciplinary approach to contemporary art, design, architecture and moving image. The new programme opens in February 2027 with Sarah Sze: Centrifuge, an exhibition at the M+ Focus Gallery dedicated to the American artist’s intricate, immersive installations.
Sarah Sze’s intricate worlds of image and space
Renowned for installations that weave together found objects, images, video and everyday materials, Sarah Sze creates intricate environments that challenge conventional perceptions of space and time. Her compositions extend across walls and into the surrounding architecture, balancing apparent chaos with extraordinary precision. Through delicate networks of objects and shifting visual references, Sze reveals the complexity of how we perceive and navigate the world.
Her exhibition launches a wider programme of exhibitions, talks, screenings and workshops, supported by a digital platform exploring artists who have shaped contemporary visual culture. With a particular focus on Hong Kong, Greater China and Asia, Pioneering Visions aims to uncover overlooked narratives and encourage new perspectives on influential artistic practices.
From film preservation to contemporary art
Since 2023, CHANEL has supported M+’s moving-image programme, including the restoration of nine Hong Kong New Wave films that have reached audiences through more than 130 screenings worldwide. All nine titles are scheduled to return to M+ Cinema for the M+ Restored Festival in November 2026, followed by a 2027 film cycle spotlighting six visionary works from across Asia.
The partnership has also strengthened the Asian Avant-Garde Film Collection, which recently acquired 60 moving-image works, approximately half originating from Hong Kong. Between 2024 and 2026, the Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival presented 55 public programmes, attracting more than 10,300 participants.
Through the CHANEL Culture Fund, the French house supports cultural institutions and initiatives that encourage artistic exchange and preserve cultural heritage. Its expanded relationship with M+ extends this commitment across disciplines, fostering dialogue between Asia and the international art world. With Sarah Sze: Centrifuge marking the beginning of Pioneering Visions, the partnership sets its sights on new forms of artistic experimentation and discovery.
