Museums Without Men

Museums Without Men

During Women’s History Month, major museums including Tate Britain and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York are launching Museums Without Men, a project curated by art critic Katy Hessel. The initiative aims to highlight dozens of overlooked female and gender non-conforming artists from their collections.

Hessel, author of The Story of Art Without Men, noticed the lack of female representation in museums and designed audio guides to provide context about artists such as Bisa Butler, Wangechi Mutu and Lucie Rie. These guides will be available on museum websites and on Hessel’s platform, offering insights into the artists’ lives and works. By addressing the historical dominance of white male artists in museum collections, this project aims to diversify and broaden the representation of artists from diverse backgrounds.
