Sag mir wo die Blumen sind

In spring 2025, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will collaborate for the first time to present a major exhibition of renowned artist Anselm Kiefer. The exhibition, titled Sag mir wo die Blumen sind, explores the deep connection between Kiefer and Vincent van Gogh, whose work has significantly influenced the German artist throughout his career. Kiefer’s admiration for Van Gogh began in his youth, and this exhibition traces how that inspiration continues to shape his art today.

The presentation at the Van Gogh Museum will highlight Kiefer’s ongoing relationship with Van Gogh’s legacy, featuring a series of previously unseen paintings by Kiefer alongside iconic works by Van Gogh. A significant piece of the exhibition, Sag mir wo die Blumen sind, will be displayed at both museums, offering a breathtaking experience for visitors. At the Stedelijk Museum, the exhibition will focus on Kiefer’s early ties to the Netherlands and his longstanding relationship with the museum, which began with the acquisition of works like Innenraum (1981) and Märkischer Sand (1982).

This exhibition also brings together Kiefer’s most celebrated works from the Stedelijk collection, providing a unique opportunity to see these pieces in one space for the first time. The Stedelijk will also showcase more recent paintings and two new installations, including the monumental Sag mir wo die Blumen sind, which will occupy the area around the museum’s historic staircase. This diptych exhibition offers a rare glimpse into Kiefer’s artistic evolution and his personal connection to both Van Gogh and the Stedelijk Museum.
