Film director Sofia Coppola offers a rare glimpse into her creative process with the release of her new book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999–2023. The “scrapbook”, as she calls it, is a visual feast of hundreds of photographs, reference collages, magazine covers, and other never-before-seen assemblages from the director’s personal archives.
Sofia Coppola is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of her generation. Her motion pictures, such as The Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), and her forthcoming Priscilla (2023), are renowned for their atmospheric visuals and sensitive pastel explorations of dreamy girlhood worlds.
The 488-page book delves into the director’s memories, which she finally decided to revisit once COVID appeared in 2020. It was during this time that Coppola sorted through her visual archives and came up with the idea of creating a scrapbook of nostalgic “tidbits.” The archive includes photos from the set of Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, and behind-the-scenes photos from The Bling Ring (2013), where Paris Hilton and Emma Watson stand together. The scrapbook also includes Coppola’s storyboards and sketches.
The Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999–2022 is a visual journey behind the scenes where creativity knows no boundaries. The scrapbook is published in a limited edition and available for purchase this September.
