At the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Jenny Holzer: Light Line is a remarkable reimagining of Holzer’s groundbreaking 1989 installation. The site-specific project encompasses all six ramps of the museum’s iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda.
Light Line is based on Holzer’s original 1989 installation, which transformed the interior of the Guggenheim with scrolled LED text displaying her incendiary series Truisms and Inflammatory Essays. Creating a dynamic dialogue between past and present, the new installation not only revisits these iconic texts but also introduces new ones, some of which are generated by artificial intelligence.
The central concept of Light Line is to highlight the power of the written word across media and time periods in Holzer’s oeuvre. The installation uses LED signs to project texts that explore themes such as feminism, violence, oppression and vulnerability. Holzer’s integration of both her original phrases and new AI-generated statements invites viewers to reflect on the evolving nature of these issues.
On view from May 17th to September 29th,2024, Jenny Holzer: Light Line invites visitors to engage with Jenny Holzer’s thought-provoking and visually stunning works within the unique architectural context of the Guggenheim Museum.
